A Boy is a Girl is a Superhero

There are plenty of animes tackling subjects like being transgender in a rather creative way (Sailor Moon comes to mind) and there are even more about cross-dressing. Western cartoon on the other hand rarely ever dare to go anywhere near this. Until now.  The Canadian/Australian co-production SheZow features the animated adventures of a twelve year old boy who becomes the worlds finest female superhero.

Twelve year-old Guy Hamdon is a natural cut-up who fancies himself an extreme dude with his own macho catch phrase, “It’s a GUY thing.” Guy lives the dream of every rough-and-tumble boy when he discovers an awesome power ring which transforms him into a mighty superhero! Pretty cool, huh? Well, there’s just one tiny catch… the ring that gives Guy his amazing super powers was only meant to be worn by a girl and the result is absolutely she-larious! Guy must use his super powers to battle mega-villains while sporting an outrageous female superhero costume… which actually ends up helping him tremendously on his own personal journey toward becoming one heck of a super man.

SheZow has more she-puns than you can shake a she-stick at, she-seriously. SheZow which is currently only available in the Australian television market on Network Ten with select episodes on the show’s official YouTube channel, is a new animated superhero show aimed at children in the 6-11 year old range. SheZow features the main characters of Guy with his twin sister Kelly and their best friend Maz, who explore the world of SheZow when Guy and Kelly discover that their aunt Agnes now passed, was the legendary super-heroine herself.

Kelly who is the president of the SheZow fan club and self described biggest SheZow fan and expert on the planet is excited at the thought of becoming the next in the long line of famous women to wear the SheZow ring. Her dream is dashed when Guy takes the ring and jokingly puts it on to taunt his sister, not knowing that anyone who wears the ring can never take it off until they pass away. Suddenly Guy is transformed into the super powered and over feminized SheZow, with his/her superpowers including but not limited to, sonic scream, super strength, light-saber lipstick, super slap, vanishing cream (which turns him invisible) and super speed in high heels.

Combined with a super smart computer named She-la and endless bright pink gadgetry, Guy as SheZow and Kelly as his coach on all things girly fight to save the world from an assortment of villains who spout just as many bad puns as they do.

Song for Jamey

Sacha Sacket, who is part of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, grew up in Iran. He was bullied and isolated and could relate very well to the story of Jamey, a 14-year-old gay teen who took his own life after being bullied for years. His Song for Jamey is quite haunting. It’s available on Spotify.

He tries to understand
He turns the pages
They say he’s not a man
It burns in stages
And so
Here’s how the story goes
He dies to let you know
That the kids won’t quit
And his heart don’t fit
And his life is shit

They say it’s such a shame
The war and wages
They find some kids to blame
And turn their pages
But no
Here’s how the story goes
He died to let you know
That the kids won’t quit
And his heart don’t fit
And his life is shit

Why Ezra is Queer, not Gay

Erza Miller, one of the stars of the acclaimed The Perks of Being a Wallflower, came out as queer last year and explains why he used that word to describe himself instead of gay. “It’s generational in the way that that term is newly available in a certain way,” Ezra tells The Advocate in an interview. “I think it feels the most open and inclusive and that’s what makes it apply for me, personally.”

He broke out in 2011 in the film We’ve Got to Talk About Kevin after appearing in such television shows as Royal Pains, Californication, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The 20-year-old’s character in Wallflower was a gay high school student involved in a secret relationship with one of the school’s football players. But unlike his Wallflower character, the actor doesn’t like refer to himself as gay.

“I think there are a lot of people who fall on this open spectrum of sexuality,” he says. “My friends and I use that word as an all-encompassing banner and for every human being. There should be an ongoing question and investigation of who you love and everything that’s involved with that very tricky and beautiful thing.”

World’s oldest “Porn” is bisexual

One of the world’s earliest carvings conveying human sexuality shows bisexuality was normal, even over 3,000 years ago The Kangjiashimenji Petroglyphs, rock carvings found in a remote region in northwest China, show a fertility ritual.

Archaeologist Wang Binghua discovered the symbols in the late 1980s, but little has been written about them. In a new report from Mary Mycio, the carvings show 100 figures which abstractly depicts different ways of expressing sexuality.

While carvings have been found dating back over 20,000 years, these petroglyphs are probably the most explicit and intricate. Mycio writes: ‘The few scholars who have studied the petroglyphs think that the larger-than-life hourglass figures that begin the tableau symbolize females. They have stylized triangular torsos, shapely hips and legs, and they wear conical headdresses with wispy decorations. ‘Male images are smaller triangles with stick legs and bare heads. Ithyphallic is archeology-talk for “erect penis,” and nearly all of the males have one. ‘A third set of figures appear to be bisexual. Combining elements of males and females, they are ithyphallic but wear female headwear, a decoration on the chest, and sometimes a mask. They might be shamans. Read on…
