“Gay Sex” with Jesus might get Teen into Prison

A teenager is facing 2 years in jail after simulating gay oral sex with a Jesus statue. The 14-year-old western Pennsylvanian was charged under a rarely used 1972 law that makes it a crime to desecrate a venerated object after he posted the pictures online. The teen did not damage the statue, but simply posted a picture that some find offensive. The statue of Jesus kneeling in prayer belongs to Love in the Name of Christ, a Christian organization with a branch of Everett.

Gay rights activists have expressed outrage at the decision to give a boy a criminal record for something as ridiculous as this. ‘This is a blasphemy law, pure and simple, and it is in clear violation of the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution,’ said Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen.

‘If the kid had destroyed or damaged the statue, he would clearly deserve to face consequences. But taking a picture that offends somebody’s religious sensibilities? This is not Russia or Iran; this is the United States, where we’re supposed to value freedom of speech. Pennsylvania should be ashamed of itself for so clearly violating this kid’s constitutional rights.’

He added: ‘The Establishment Clause, part of the First Amendment, states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” ‘Nowhere does it say that religious people reserve the right never to be offended by anything.

‘This child has not committed a criminal act, and Truth Wins Out strongly believes that the family court with jurisdiction is abusing its power by prosecuting a kid and potentially marking him as a criminal simply because somebody was offended.’

One + One Coming Out

That coming-outs are a thing is a shame. That people have to admit being a bit different from other folks like it’s a crime, that they have to justify themselves for who they love and even risk losing friends, family and their home over it. But moments like the one in this video make it almost worth it that the coming-out is still a ritual many queer teens have to go through. Almost.

Boys wear Skirts in Support of Trans Classmate

Nine days after transgender student Maria Muniz was fined by school officials for wearing a skirt, a group of her classmates decided to stage a protest: both male and female students would all wear skirts on the same day. Soon after their demonstration an ecstatic Muniz learned that the school’s decision was overturned, reports the UK’s Orange News. The principal told Brazil’s Globo that the school will consider relaxing their dress code.

After the protest, school officials posted a picture of their male and female students wearing skirts to social media, where it became widely shared. Supporters have been expressing their support online to Muniz using the hashtag #VouDeSaia on Twitter and other sites.

"For me, wearing a skirt was about expressing my freedom over who I am inside and not how society sees me," Muniz said, "I am really happy about the way my classmates supported me and hope it serves as an example to others to feel encouraged to do the right thing," she added. "I was always taught at school to accept who you are. I am just trying to live that."

Bisexuality

$

If you’re bi you’re most likely well aware of all the trouble that comes with bisexuality and the common myths around it. Part of the reason for the latter is that research into bisexuality is beset by problems: unexamined assumptions, scientific incompetence, the politicization of sexual identity, you name it. The Nerve recounts a history of dud studies.

In 2011, Northwestern University came back and apologized for the six years it had rejected the validity of an entire sexual orientation and bisexual men’s experience. Their 2005 study had mainly sourced participants from gay mags, but this time around, the researchers found subjects who identified as bisexual and who had both sexual and romantic relationships with both men and women. While watching videos of female and male same-sex encounters, the bisexual men doing the study were aroused all around. All combinations of videos gave them boners. Meaning, bisexual men were just what they said they were: bisexual men.

Meanwhile this week two new studies were released. The first is called Understanding Issues Facing Bisexual Americans. The result of a collaboration between the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), BiNet USA, and the Bisexual Resource Center, the report is an overview of the health, safety, and economic disparities experienced by bisexual Americans. It also includes policy recommendations to address these disparities. From the press release:

While more than half of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community identifies as bisexual, bisexual people are vulnerable to poverty, discrimination, and poor physical and mental health outcomes–often at rates higher than their lesbian and gay peers…

"Despite comprising the largest population within the LGBT community, bisexual people are among the most invisible," said Ineke Mushovic, executive director of the Movement Advancement Project. "The failure to account for bisexual lives and experiences compounds a lack of social support and keeps bisexual people in the closet."

"Bisexual people often face pervasive stereotypes and myths surrounding bisexuality," said Ellyn Ruthstrom, president of the Bisexual Resource Center. "The fear of being stereotyped manifests itself in a real way: bisexual people are six times more likely than gay men and lesbians to be closeted. This impacts the emotional well-being of many bisexual people and is a contributing factor to the community’s higher rates of poor physical and mental health."

The second report, released yesterday focused on bisexual youth: Tthe Human Rights Campaign Foundation, in partnership with the Bisexual Resource Center, BiNet USA, and the Bisexual Organizing Project, published Supporting and Caring For Our Bisexual Youth, a report based on one of the largest-ever surveys of LGBT youth in America. More than 40 percent of the 10,000 LGBT youth surveyed identify as bisexual, and those youth report that they face greater challenges coming out and being accepted than their peers who are gay or lesbian.

The survey found:

  • Only five percent of bisexual youth reported being "very happy," compared to 21 percent of non-LGBT youth surveyed separately to provide a point of comparison.
  • Nearly a third of bisexual young people said they had been "frequently or often" harassed or called names at school, compared to nine percent of non-LGBT youth who reported similar mistreatment.
  • When asked if they have an adult family member they can turn to, 44 percent of bisexual youth said they did, compared to 79 percent of non-LGBT youth who reported having a supportive adult at home.

HRC’s Liz Halloran adds:

Many of the young people surveyed expressed the potential to be attracted to more than one gender, but rejected the term "bisexual" when describing their sexual orientation. Instead, they wrote their own descriptions, including "queer" and "pansexual."

The findings, released on the 15th annual Celebrate Bisexuality Day, also show that bisexual youth in America are overwhelmingly female, and confront broad skepticism and misunderstanding about their sexual identities.

"It hurts deeply when young people are told they are not legitimate, and, unfortunately, that is what many bisexual youth are hearing from their family and friends," says Ellen Kahn, director of the HRC Foundation’s Children, Youth & Families Program. "This report will help bust the myths and misunderstandings associated with bisexuality, and create a space for young people to be more open, and to find the support they deserve."

Football, with all its tribalism and machismos, is not exactly known to be a comfort zone for queer folks. Some progress was made recently—in the lower Swedish leagues or with players coming out after their career—but there’s yet to be an active player who dares to live his life openly and without shame, someone queer kids can look up to, someone straight kids can grow up with, seeing that it doesn’t matter who you love.

Some, alas very few, football clubs and their fan scenes are trying to work towards this day. In Germany that’s mostly left-wing clubs like TeBe Berlin, Roter Stern Leipzig and the FC St. Pauli from Hamburg, Singer & Songwriter Marcus Wiebusch, who’s an active supporter of St. Pauli, recently released a touching music video about this fight:

Straight Pride… Really?

$

Pride is an interesting word and idea. It’s very presence and concept is ingrained in our society. We know from the Bible that it "cometh before a fall" and have been advised to "swallow" it occasionally. It is often thought to be a negative trait and is described as a high, or inflated opinion of one’s own traits, abilities and socio-economic position. But to me, and many of members of the LGBT, pride is not defined this way.

We are not arrogant or lofty or full of ourselves. We don’t inflate our importance or try to deflate others in order to make ourselves feel or appear more important. We don’t sacrifice others’ feelings as a means to create a higher image or impression of ourselves. To us, pride is not a negative personality trait or a result of arrogance or insecurities. Pride is a deliberate attempt to equalize a society. Pride is a statement, an attitude and a decision. You see, we have been questioned and accused, abused and diminished for the entirety of history. We have been told that we are deficient and defective.

It’s assumed by much of the population that we are either mentally ill or dealing with residual emotional baggage brought on by childhood tragedy. It’s assumed that our misguidance or rebellion can be fixed through therapy and that, perhaps, we will eventually abandon our lifestyle and become heterosexual.

During this past week of all the marriage equality decisions going on in the United States Supreme Court, I noticed some people posting meme’s championing "straight pride" on Facebook. The catchy phrase and illustration stated how proud they were to be straight and it encouraged anyone amongst their friends (which is predictably most of their list) who is straight and proud to repost it to their own wall. REALLY?

It’s apparent that people don’t understand the concept of gay pride. Even some of my family have no clue.  Let me explain it to you. Read on…
