Coming Out Day, which was celebrated last week, was a welcome opportunity for many companies to ride the rainbow capitalism wave some more. We talked about this a couple of times before, it’s a complex subject with a lot to unpack.
From how it’s BS that queer people have to come out in the first place and announce their identity as if it’s some dirty secret they need to come clean about to the fact that many companies use LGBTQ+ folks to appear woke and profit from genuine activism.
On the other hand coming out can of course be a freeing experience and even if advertisements use queer representation for questionable reasons, it’s still representation and actually proven to help change the minds of the general public.
Personally I’m not a fan of mixing brand rep with queer activism but the video Oreo released for Coming Out Day is pretty cute so have a look below if you’d like to. Their cookies are still overrated though :p
