This is the song Sweden won the Eurovision Song Contest with. And this is the song you’ll hear on every gay pride parade across Europe this summer. It’s no surprise that Loreen, who was born in Stockholm as the child of Moroccan immigrants, took the cake but she wasn’t Sweden’s only bet in the contest: More than a third of the 42 participating songs were written by Swedish composers who seem to be the top of the class since people like Max Martin wrote hits for acts like the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.

(Fun fact: Loreen won by a margin that was way bigger than her lead in the melodifestivalen, the Swedish preliminaries for the Eurovision Song Contest. Some of the strongest competition she got back then came from Ulrik Munther who made it to the third place with his song Soldiers)

Personally I liked Iceland’s song as well even ‘tho it wasn’t just as good as Sweden’s; a certain other milkboys admin, while cheering for Sweden, thought that Cyprus was great, one of the admins of the milkboard thought Serbia might win and Jedward from Ireland were at least pretty cute ;)

And while the decision to let Azerbaijan host the contest after winning last year was criticised in vain at least some people tried to squeeze in some politics. The Swedish TV host mentioned gay rights, Loreen met with civil rights activists in Baku (and was harshly criticised for doing so by the local regime) and German entertainer Anke Engelke, while presenting Germany’s vote, said: “It’s good to be able to vote and to have a choice. Good luck on your journey, Azerbaijan. Europe is watching you".

flattr this!
