Freedom for Some

For some Americans “Freedom” means that Christians and “conservatives” should be allowed to discriminate everyone who isn’t straight like they used to and often enough still discriminate everyone who isn’t white. On the other hand they liken those who demand the freedom to love whoever they want to the Nazis. Literally. In their eyes not wanting to be treated as a second class citizen because of your sexual preference makes you just as bad as those guys who killed millions of Jews, gays, intellectuals and socialists in concentration camps in World War II. Literally.

This mind-set is once again expressed in a film US senator Rick Santorum is producing in the wake of a verdict from the US Supreme Court that ruled that companies are people and can have religious views and therefore are allowed to circumvent the law that would require them to cover women’s contraceptives in their health care plans (which, unlike Viagra that these companies don’t object to at all is something many women actually need) and also gives them the freedom to just ignore laws made for example to protect queer employees from discrimination.

Please read more about you being a Nazi on Bilerico and watch the trailer for the film below…

There’s these two boys in my school… this morning they were holding hands in French class and here one is fondly stroking the other’s arm. When a friend of mine asked them if they were dating the one with the black sweater just smiled while the other one started blushing really hard and just stuttered a weak “what”.

Coming Out Simulator 2014

For a young queer person, coming out in North America can be really hard. Everyone has a different experience, but inevitably, it changes your life and it changes your relationships. It can also be a horrible nightmare. Kids are routinely bullied, not accepted by their families and even kicked out of their homes for being queer. The statistics are depressing, and the reality of the situation is that it’s scary for many, whether their parents, loved ones and friends ultimately accept them or not. But it’s also the only way forward for most queer people, since the alternative is to live a lie.

Coming Out Simulator 2014, by indie developer Nicky Case, is a deeply personal adventure game that details precisely that struggle with humour and gut-punching emotional honesty. It allows the player to join them, and in fact, play as them, as they come out to their parents. Case’ game is inspired by real-life events, they call it "emotionally authentic, factually inaccurate."

"The main arc of the story, coming out to my parent and it ending in me having to break up with my boyfriend, is true," Case told me in an email. "More or less. A lot of the dialogue [consists of] things my mother actually said, such as ‘Don’t let the gays recruit you’ or ‘Which one of you is the woman in the relationship?’ My father did punch me, as he does in one ending of the game, but he didn’t hit me when I came out, since he left the family long before."

"And his violent tendencies [were] partially why my mother divorced him."

Case made the game partially as an enrichment exercise — they wanted to experiment with a narrative-heavy game, and work on story writing skills. The Nar8 game jam — which Coming Out Simulator 2014 debuted at — gave Case "an excuse and a deadline." But the primary reason was an opportunity to explore a traumatic, life-changing event.

I finally feel secure enough to … basically … broadcast my personal story

"Four years after my messy coming out experience, I finally, finally feel secure enough in my emotions and identity to … basically … broadcast my personal story to tens of thousands of players worldwide. Y’all get to see my dirty laundry now."

One Mom’s moving Speech

"My daughter is six years old. She transitioned, which means she changed her outward appearance from male to female and started living full time as her true gender, when she was four. Until that point she was quite a rough and tumble little boy with a buzz cut and a shark tooth necklace."

And so begins the absolutely beautiful speech Debi Jackson gave earlier this year about her transgender daughter, AJ, in Kansas City. As Jackson continues, she outlines how her family came to realize that AJ is transgender, what happened the first day she went to school "in girl clothes" and the bigotry her family faced.

But the best part of the video may be when Jackson addresses the comments she’s heard about her daughter and sets the record straight about statements like you "wanted a girl so you turned your child into one" and "kids have no idea what they want or who they are — my kids wants to be a dog, should I let him?"  Spend six minutes and get to know Jackson and her family a little better. You’ll be happy you did.
