Grindr drops ethnicity filter
Queer hookup app Grindr has responded to the protests against police brutality and racial inequality in the United States by removing one of its most-criticized features. In an effort to “stand in solidarity” with the Black Lives Matter movement, the company announced it will discontinue its ethnicity filter, which allowed users to sort through prospective connections by the colour of their skin.
“We will not be silent, and we will not be inactive,” officials wrote on Twitter and Instagram. “We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform.”
We will not be silent. Black Lives Matter. https://t.co/K671PrwJc0 pic.twitter.com/93ninYt2u9
— Grindr (@Grindr) June 1, 2020
News of the change came after Grindr sparked criticism on social media by pledging solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in a May 29 tweet. Pointing to the ethnicity filter, many followers called the company’s gesture hypocritical.
Much like other dating apps, Grindr has long been accused of racial profiling, as well as reinforcing stereotypes and other divisive views, by allowing users to filter prospective matches by race.
A 2018 Cornell University study found that Black men and women were 10 times more likely to message white users on dating apps than white users were to message Black people.

Helix Academy: Looking Back
Worried about going home for the weekend and confronting his parents about being gay, Jessie Montgomery retreats to his old dorm room at Helix Academy. Cheerful memories are conjured up as Jessie finds his Crescent Club medallion, academy gym shirt and old photos which spark a recollection of his time in the locker room with Jamie Sanders. Later, at home, a confrontation with his mother sends Jessie running back to the dorms into the arms of his friend Scotty Clarke.
I know, I know, the acting is not the highlight here. Just enjoy looking at some cute guys for the sake of… just that ;)

“But…”
J.K. Rowling was met with tidal wave of anger after using her enormous platform to send a string of anti-trans tweets. It seems like Rowling was looking at the outburst of support for the Black Lives Matter movement on social media and thought “Wait… no one’s talking about me right now!” and here we are. Queue the deep sighs and rolling eyes.
Her reason for being upset? She thought an article about people who menstruate refused to use the word “women.” Rowling was of course full of it. But being wrong never stopped her to jump on any opportunity to tell the world how transphobic she is.
Anyway. Instead of wasting any more energy on her, here’s a list of fantasy and sci-fi books with trans and non-binary characters that you can read without supporting a TERF.
If only Rowling would be a bit more like Emma Watson…
