The Pro-Bullying Law
Bilerico reports:
After a two year hiatus, the US state of Tennessee is once again taking a look at a "Don’t Say Gay" bill, this one with new and improved discriminatory provisions, including requiring teachers and school counsellors to out LGBT students to their parents.
The potential for harm to LGBT students, and students with LGBT parents, is obvious. It’s easy to see how a the child of LGBT parents could even be forbidden from talking about their home life in any way that might require comment from a teacher, such as in a school report or show & tell. I won’t even get started on the compulsory outing provision, as many others in the LGBT media have already taken that on.
So who then does this bill benefit?
The Right would have us believe that this sort of legislation ensures that challenging social issues are addressed by parents rather than educators. It’s the same sort of flawed reasoning that has given us the catastrophic public health failure that is abstinence-only education.
In reality however, this bill only protects one class of people: school bullies. You see, if teachers saying anything "inconsistent with natural human reproduction" is prohibited, it becomes extremely challenging for educators to respond to the abuse of students who are, or are perceived to be LGBT. After all, if saying that there’s nothing wrong with being LGBT could cost a teacher their job, how can they come to the defence of a bullied LGBT kid?
I’ve known Christians who felt that it was their child’s protected religious freedom (and moral duty) to aggressively attempt to "argue" LGBT students out of their sexual orientation or gender identity, regardless of how this impacted the other student. It’s hard to imagine that these sorts of encounters aren’t in the mind of the bill’s creators. Read on…

Rest in Peace, Jadin
A 15-year-old bullied gay teen died this weekend. Jadin was taken to hospital in Oregon earlier this month after he hanged himself on a playground at an elementary school. A close family friend, said the teen had complained of homophobic bullying a week before and had talked to a counsellor at his local high school. “He was different, and they tend to pick on the different ones,” he said.
Jadin was a sophomore, and a member of the cheerleading squad. “If someone was down and out he would walk into a room and say a couple quick words and everybody would just forget about their problems and smile, he just had a gift.”
More than 200 people attended a vigil two weeks ago in honour of the boy. After the event, one of Jadin’s friend said: “He is amazingly sensitive. He is an amazing young man who is smart and very social; he has a personal and a presence that you want to be a part of.”

Always You
Gisberta
Again and again Elisha finds himself confronted by Alex, Timo, Sascha, and Mika – all 14-year-olds living in the boys’ orphanage with him. Their worlds ought to be similar and yet they are completely different. While Elisha builds tiny obstacle courses for ants in the woods, the other boys spend their days watching porn, absorbed in their emerging sexual fantasies.
When the attractive 31-year-old Gisberta is newly employed at the orphanage, she quickly becomes the object of their desires and the boys try to approach her with clumsily aggressive adolescent behavior. Elisha, however, actually gets to know Gisberta.
Alex, who has his eyes everywhere, discovers the two laughing in the kitchen. His erupting jealousy drives the group to continuously humiliate Elisha in any way possible, but this just brings Elisha closer to Gisberta, and a tender friendship develops between them. But one day the sexual fantasies of the other boys take a turn to brutal reality.

UK becomes a bit more equal
After Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden the UK finds itself in a race with France to become the 12th place in the world where marriage equality becomes a nation-wide reality. Channel 4 used the opportunity to air a segment about Britain’s changing attitudes towards gay rights.
Some minor legal inequalities will remain under the proposed marriage equality legislation in the UK though as, the Guardian points out:
Those who draft the parliamentary bills have been unable to define what constitutes consummation of a same-sex union. Consequently there is no provision for divorce on the grounds of non-consummation of a gay marriage.
That problem also means that same-sex couples who wish to divorce will not be able to cite adultery with someone of the same sex – the civil servants similarly struggled to find a definition of adultery between two men or two women. Adultery will, nonetheless, be a permitted grounds for divorce if it follows sexual intercourse between one of the couple and someone of the opposite sex. That, at least, is consistent with existing marriage laws: if a man decides he is gay and leaves his wife for a man, she can divorce him for unreasonable behaviour but not adultery, which is defined as sexual intercourse.

Rest in Peace, Anthony
A bisexual teen from Lancashire, England was found hanging in the woods after suffering homophobic bullying in school. Before 16-year-old Anthony went missing in November, he spent the day with his girlfriend Charlotte. His body was found on January 14, hanging in the woods near his home. Anthony’s mother blames her son’s classmates, who harassed him about his sexuality.
“Anthony was getting bullied by girls for two years. He would get shouted ‘gay boy’ at, get slapped in the face, come home with his school jumper ripped and even got his phone stolen. He would be upset but pick himself up and go back the next day,” she said. “I spoke to his teachers about it, but Anthony begged me not to get involved because it was making it worse and he’d get embarrassed.”
Though Anthony had been with Charlotte for two years, his mother always suspected he might be gay. She had learned he had flirted with men online, but hesitated to bring it up. “He was still with Charlotte and I was worried he was confused about his sexuality,” she said. “I kept it to myself as I didn’t want to embarrass him or scare him off talking to me.”
When the police found a suicide note in Anthony’s backpack. “Well, I’m gone but not completely,’” it read. “I will be watching over you and making sure you make the right choices. And don’t forget me, I’m in heaven looking down. Please don’t grieve and try to move on as best you can, I love you all so very much.” He left his XBox to his younger brother, but didn’t leave any explanation as to why he had taken his own life.
“I think his feelings for the same sex left him struggling to know what to do about it,” his mother said. “There was no one there for Anthony,” she added. “I just feel sorry — I feel like I let him down.”
